Sorry to clog this community with questions about moving in; this'll be the last one, hopefully.

We were planning on taking a place in Atlantic Station. Sure, it's a mall, but it's super-convenient for trying to use public transportation and right next to Turner, where my girlfriend will be working (thus, making our current one-car situation more manageable).

We were all ready to pull the trigger when we started reading about the shootings over the last couple of years and general degradation of the community; doesn't sound quite so appealing now.

I just wanted to know if you had any thoughts on that, as well as the two other places we're looking:

*821 Ralph McGill Blvd NE, at Freedom Park
*Alexander at the District, just off Northside Dr. by I-75.

We like the Poncey-Highlands neighborhood, and the Alexander price is great, but we're not sure about the safety of the neighborhoods, and can't find much info about them. And yes, we know crime's simply a reality of Atlanta. We're coming from downtown L.A.

I dunno, I just trust livejournal people more than your average forum, I guess. But yeah, this should be (hopefully) my last posting about housing, and I appreciate all of your help thus far, it's been great. Definitely looking forward to staying a part of the community.

Howdy,

I posted awhile back about buying a used car. Thanks for the recommendations. However, after looking at the prices and all the hassle of owning a car I am feeling unenthusiastic about car ownership. Has anyone here had a Zipcar account? I live in Kirkwood and would be using the cars out of the Candler Park Marta Station.

Thanks!

(Audio) Barack Obama Rants on White People’s Greed [05 Jul 2008|04:57pm]
stoptheaclu

While the Michelle Obama “whitey” tape is only a rumor at this point, it would not surprise me to find out it is true. The reason why is because of several factors. The now famous Reverend Wright preached against “whitey” in several sermons, and Obama remained a faithful follower at this church for 20 years. As a matter of fact, he quotes fondly of one sermon that inspired his book “The audacity of hope” where the world’s problems are the white man’s fault. This sermon supposedly moved Obama to tears. Here is some audio of Obama fondly quoting from this inspiring racist sermon, but don’t expect CNN to be playing this anytime soon.

Here is more on Obama’s opinons on whites.

“It is this world, a world where cruise ships throw away more food in a day than most residents of Port-au-Prince see in a year, where white folks’ greed runs a world in need, apartheid in one hemisphere, apathy in another hemisphere…That’s the world! On which hope sits!”

Over at Atlas Shrugs they are counting the racial slurs of Obama and the numbers are getting high.

my girlfriend, recently moved from new york and who tends to keep away from most LJ communities, is currently seeking something administrative, clerical, or entry-level in any field for someone with a degree in english/communications/cultural studies) in terms of employment. we're both pretty much fed up of craigslist and every ad being some sort of obnoxious scam or attempt to snag personal info for various online schools to begin lead generation, thus, as a random off-chance, i turn here. the one drawback, in addition to her being relatively new to the area, is that anything would have to be accessible via marta in some form or fashion (CCT, you count, too!).

not expecting a million dollar job for her to pop up here, but thinking maybe someone just *might* be looking to hire and not wanting to mess with the, well, mess that is craigslist.

thanks for your time, etc.

Canadian goons seize children because of mother’s political beliefs [05 Jul 2008|01:09pm]
stoptheaclu

We read:

“Manitoba Child and Family services was in court Monday to argue for permanent guardianship of a girl and boy, after the girl was sent to school sporting a swastika — a symbol typically associated with racially-motivated hate groups.

The children’s mother denies she has done anything wrong. “I think I’m a pretty good mother. I’ve raised my children to have pride in themselves. That’s all I’ve ever done.” she told CTV News, as she sat beneath a banner with the slogan “White Pride Worldwide.”

Child services was called to a city elementary school in March after the girl, 7, arrived at school with a Swastika, the words “Hail Victory” and “Aryan Pride” written on her arms and one leg in permanent maker. The number “14/88,” a reference to Hitler, was also written on the little girl. The 14 refers to the number of words in the slogan: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.” The 88 stands for HH and means “Heil Hitler.”

Police and officials from the department went to the family’s Winnipeg home and seized the girl’s two-year-old brother, and in the process discovered what they said was evidence of the parents’ neo-Nazi beliefs.

The mother of the children has maintained she is not a neo-Nazi, but is simply proud of her northern European background and describes herself as a “white nationalist.” She said her daughter drew the swastika on her own arm after taking part in a “white pride” racist march in Calgary. When the girl’s teacher washed the symbol off, the mother and daughter drew it on again with a marker.

The mother said drawing the swastika was stupid, but insisted the act harmed no one and her beliefs are a family matter. “It’s OK to be proud to be a native, it’s OK to preach black power,” she said, before adding, “But when you’re white and you’re proud, it’s wrong.”

Source

Black pride is fine but white pride is to be severely punished? Where does the criminalization of political beliefs end? Speaking ill of homosexuals could cause you to lose your kids next? In Canada it would be no surprise. In the USA even the ACLU has on occasions defended the rights of neo-Nazis to express their beliefs.

Question about external harddrives [05 Jul 2008|08:46am]

atlanta

[theindiequeen]
Hey, everyone.

So I have this WD passport external harddrive (I think it's 60 gigs, maybe 80..) and about a year ago, it randomly crashed. As in one day it was fine, and the next it wasn't working. I worked with engineers at the time and none of them could fix it. It had my entire music collection on there (about 40 gigs) and a bunch of pictures and old writing that I had done.

Anyway, I haven't even tried to get anyone to restore it over the past year, because I never had an extra 200 or 300 dollars lying around. (You know, college.)

I was wondering if anyone knew of a place where I could take it around town to see if someone could restore all of that. Does it matter that it's been dead for almost a year? Is there anywhere where I won't have to pay a ridiculous amount of money, especially if they don't end up getting it off?

Any help you could give me would be much appreciated!

What's the best internet service provider to use? I'm looking for cheap, reliable broadband (I understand this isn't always possible, haha), and I'm also going to want to get basic cable service. I know comcast is in the area, and in my experience, they're pretty crappy, so I was wondering if there are other options?

I'm open to the possibility of getting my television and internet through separate providers, though naturally it'd be easier to do together.

What do you recommend? What've been your experiences? Thanks!

What Went Wrong? [05 Jul 2008|06:21am]

How could a country founded on the ideal of individual liberty, with a state devoted to the mission of protecting it, slide down the road to tyranny as fast as, and sometimes faster than, other countries? [Public Choice theory] suggests some explanations. With hindsight, the Founders probably did not take seriously enough the danger of the state, as illustrated in Madison’s argument for a federal government that would be kept in check by the States and the will of the citizens. Perhaps the state is so dangerous that trusting it with any glorious mission is looking for trouble, even if this mission is the protection of liberty.

"As soon as a new party springs up and begins to show signs of success, a lot of political tramps are immediately attracted to its ranks. These men possess a certain amount of influence. They are trained politicians, well versed in the art of packing conventions and proficient at counting the ballots. When they come to the new party with crocodile tears of repentance coursing down their cheeks, it is too weak to refuse their aid. It opens its arms and kissing away their repentant tears, places them in the front rank where glory awaits them. The result of this is a large gain in votes and sometimes success at the polls. But this victory is only gained at the expense of principle, and the last state of that party is worse than the first."

Is Obama a Natural Born Citizen? [05 Jul 2008|04:59am]
stoptheaclu

Update: Israel Insider: Blogger admits Hawaii birth certificate forgery, subverting Obama claims

Jay McKinnon, a self-described Department of Homeland Security-trained document specialist, has implicated himself in the production of fake Hawaii birth certificate images similar to the one endorsed as genuine by the Barack Obama campaign, and appearing on the same Daily Kos blog entry where the supposedly authentic document appears.

The evidence of forgery and manipulation of images of official documents, triggered by Israel Insider’s revelation of the collection of Hawaii birth certificate images on the Photobucket site and the diligent detective work of independent investigative journalists (led by JimJ and Texas Darling) and imaging professionals such as Polarik in the three weeks since the publication of the images, implicate The Daily Kos, a “progressive” blog site, and the Obama campaign’s “Fight the Smears” website, in misleading the public with official-looking but manipulated document images of doubtful provenance. Moreover, the blog and the campaign have been negligent in allowing the promotion of obviously forged and fake official documents together with the purported image of Obama’s birth certificate.

Completely via Atlas Shrugs:

Barack Obama is not a legal U.S. natural-born citizen according to the law on the books at the time of his birth, which falls between December 24, 1952, to November 13, 1986. Federal Law requires that the office of President requires a natural-born citizen if the child was not born to two U.S. Citizen parents. This is what exempts John McCain, though he was born in the US Panama Canal Zone.

US Law very clearly states: ‘. . . If only one parent is a U.S. Citizen at the time of one’s birth, that parent must have resided in the United States for minimum ten years, five of which must be after the age of 16.’ Barack Obama’s father was not a U.S. Citizen is a fact.

Obama’s mother was only 18 when Obama was born. This means even though she had been a U.S. Citizen for 10 years, (or citizen of Hawaii being a territory), his mother fails the test for at-least-5-years- prior-to Barack Obama’s birth, but-after-age-16.

In essence, Mother alone is not old enough to qualify her son for automatic U.S. Citizenship. At most, 2 years elapsed from his mother turning 16 to the time of Barack Obama’s birth when she was 18. His mother would have needed to have been 16 + 5 = 21 years old at the time of Barack Obama’s birth for him to be a natural-born citizen. Barack Obama was already 3 years old at the time his mother would have needed to be to allow him natural citizenship from his only U.S. Citizen parent. Obama should have been naturalized as a citizen . . but that would disqualify him from holding the office.

The Constitution clearly declares: Naturalized citizens are ineligible to hold the office of President. Though Barack Obama was sent back to Hawaii at age 10, any other information does not matter because his mother is the one who must fulfill the requirement to be a U.S. Citzen for 10 years prior to his birth on August 4, 1961, with 5 of those years being after age 16.

Further, Obama may have had to have remained in the USA for some time frame to protect any citizenship he might have had, rather than living in Indonesia. This is very clear cut and a glaring violation of U.S. Election law. I think the Governor Schwarzenegger of California should be very interested in discovering if Obama is allowed to be elected President without being a natural-born U.S. Citizen, since this would set a precedent. Stay tuned to your TV sets because I suspect some of this information will be leaking through over the next several days.

It would be simple for Obama to dismiss this ongoing question. Can we see the freakin birth certificate already? C’mon!

For Independence Day 2008: The Acrid Stench of Treason [04 Jul 2008|09:06pm]
stoptheaclu

Cross posted from Radarsite
Bush used phony patriotism to start war

From the Chicago Sun Times
http://www.suntimes.com/news/greeley/1034720,CST-EDT-greel02.article
ANDREW GREELEY agreel@aol.com

The Russians call World War II “The Great Patriotic War.” The current longest of our wars could well be called the same thing. It is a war that originated in the orgy of patriotism (”U.S.A.! U.S.A.! U.S.A.!”) that followed the attack on the World Trade Center and Pentagon and has been sustained by the patriotism of those who support it (”Our soldiers are defending American freedom”) and false promises of some latter-day prophets (”We are winning the war in Iraq.”) It is likely to be revived by the Iranian attack that the McCainites see as their main chance of winning the election.
The president was right in his spontaneous reaction when he first heard of the attack — “This is war!” The subtext was, “Now I’ll be a wartime president and people will forget about Florida and how Antonin Scalia stole the election.” The Arabs had killed 3,000 Americans; we had to kill at least that many of them.

The issue was: Which Arabs? The obvious target was Saudi Arabia. Most of the terrorists were from that country, indeed products of the religious education that the country provided for its devout young men. But the Saudi royal family has excellent relations with the American oil companies. So very early in the discussions the neo-cons in the administration began to promote the idea of attacking Iraq. The road to Jerusalem, they argued, is through Baghdad. The administration’s neo-cons were (and are) very heavy thinkers. They write great memos. The days when the country was hesitating, some of them found a story about cooperation between al-Qaida and the Iraq government that seemed to legitimate an attack on Iraq. Some of their allies in the media, most notably the Wall Street Journal, insisted that this fable was true.

Much of the literature on the Longest War finds it hard to explain how the decision was made to attack Iraq. Poor Scott McClellan had it part right in his book. The administration, influenced by the memos of the neo-cons, decided that toppling Saddam Hussein would restructure the Middle East to American advantage. But that was a thesis too complicated to sell to the American people. Therefore, the desire for patriotic revenge was used in combination with fear of Iraq’s (as it turns out nonexistent) weapons to launch a great patriotic war. The Republican Party continues to rely on this lethal combination to win elections.
National security means kill Arabs. We get our revenge by protecting our children. We start a patriotic war in the name of self-protection and spread patriotic gore by killing Arabs. Neat!

It is not the first patriotic/revenge war on which the country has embarked. Remember the Maine. Remember the Alamo. Remember Fort Sumter. Remember Pearl Harbor. The psychology for whipping up revenge in the name of patriotism has always worked. World War II was a just war, but the mix of patriotism and revenge made it easy for the American military to firebomb out of existence 50 Japanese cities and to destroy a couple more with atom bombs.

</span>Are the American people guilty of a war crime because of the Iraq war? Surely the leaders who cooked up the excuses for the war are. So, too, are the national media that allowed patriotism to silence them. So, too, are those ordinary Americans who almost insisted on some kind of patriotic gore. On this weekend in which we glorify — with good reason — our patriotism, we might examine our conscience about what phony patriotism has caused us to do. A third of the American population supported the war and has now changed its mind. It might be wise for such folk to prepare answers to the kinds of questions God might ask about phony patriotism.

A rebuttal from Radarsite: Can a published opinion piece actually have an unpleasant odor? Does anti-Americanism have a distinctive nasty stink? I suggest that it does. I suggest that it has a familiar distinctive aroma, like the foul contents from some overflowing toilet bowl. It is as though this traitorous author gathered together all of the most disgusting and obscene anti-Americanisms he could find and stirred them into one putrid cocktail: Happy Fourth of July, you murderous brutes! You killers of innocent women and children! Happy Independence Day, you phony patriots!

How can any American hate America this much? Who nurtured this viper in our midst? What venomous mother’s milk sustained it?

In attempting to highlight the most egregious phrases in the above essay, it soon became apparent that it was almost impossible to find a phrase that didn’t deserve to be highlighted. One after another, the outrageous bile spews forth, an endless torrent of treasonous filth.

This is not the proper format to refute every outrageous falsehood or shameless lie cited above; these particular absurdities have been debunked elsewhere long ago.

However, there is something else at work here, isn’t there? Some apparent mental disorder bordering on insanity, the bizarre and delusional mindset of the mother who drowns her children to save them from the evils of the world. Absurd and self-destructive, self-righteous and self-obsessed, dishonorable and shameless.

And yes, it stinks. It stinks to high heaven.

In summation, the author suggests: “It might be wise for such folk to prepare answers to the kinds of questions God might ask about phony patriotism.”

To which I respond: “It might be wise for this author to prepare answers to the kinds of questions God might ask about acts of treason in a time of war.” - rg

I need a Whig [04 Jul 2008|03:54pm]

[ghoststrider]
Apparently, Bob Barr has the support of the American Whig Party.

Their web design is crappy, and I haven't read their entire platform, but it seems to be a mix of conservatism and liberalism. Sounds libertarian, though of a different sort, and definitely not radical.

What I got a kick out of was the idea that they'd tie the money back into gold and silver so it wouldn't devalue, but at the same time give everybody $20,000. Uh-huh. There's gold, all right. Comedy gold.

Maybe I shouldn't write them off as loony yet, though. I'll wait for what you'll say in the comments before I make up my mind.
